I am an MLS student at Indiana University-Purdue. I created this website as my final project for my History of Libraries course. I am currently working as a technical services librarian, but my passion and specialization are in children's services. I used to conduct story times and programs for toddlers at a previous library job, and it gave me immense joy. As you can see below, I am also interested in all things "geeky": Star Wars, comics, video games, cartoons, and more.
I became interested in the history of story times at public libraries while taking this course. I realized early on that specific information pertaining to programming was hard to come by. However, as I conducted my research, I saw the same names pop up frequently around the subject of early children's services -names like Anne Carroll Moore, Caroline Hewins, and Virginia Haviland. My topic began to shift as I became fascinated with learning about the earliest children services librarians. There was much that I didn't know about the early training of librarians, and how far back storytime and programs for children went back. This webpage will focus on some early influential children's librarians-the "movers and shakers" of their time, if you will. All of these women made huge contributions to children and libraries, and also children's publishing, and deserve their place in library history.
